About the Artist

My name is Gerry Rhoades and I’m a third generation Montanan. I grew up in Western Montana, moved away for many years and am now back, living just outside of Billings, in Eastern Montana with my wife and son, one cat, and two dogs.

I’ve always been fascinated with fine woodworking and fine pens, in fact anything which exhibits fine craftsmanship and attention to detail. Unfortunately, I was a dismal failure at shop class when I was in grade school and never attempted any serious woodworking. I also build fly rods and it was rod building that lead me to purchase a wood lathe so I could turn my own grips and reel seat inserts. I discovered pen making by accident and after making two, I was hooked. Being a person who tends to like instant gratification and who also admires fine writing instruments, I find pen making to be the ideal creative outlet for me. To do it well is challenging and relaxing at the same time.

I use a wide variety of wood, both domestic and imported, including some that is quite rare and not always easy to obtain, as well as resins from only a few suppliers, people I trust to provide only the finest materials.

When I'm not making pens, I enjoy bicycling, running, downhill skiing, flyfishing and photography.
