Pen Care
GENERAL PEN CARE
DO NOT leave your pen in the car. The temperature extremes experienced in a car can damage or destroy the finish. I highly recommend against carrying your pen in a pants pocket or loose in a purse. Things like keys, coins, cell phones, etc. will absoluately ruin the finish. I have small pen pouches designed to protect your pen if you need to carry it in a pants pocket or purse. DO NOT use cleaning fluids or any abrasive substance (car wax) on any part of your new pen. The fluids and/or abrasives will damage the fine finish. Do care for your pen the way you would any fine wooden product. Protect it with a light coat of good furniture paste wax designed for wood products. After proper drying buff with a soft, clean cloth. Synthetic materials and antler are somewhat more tolerant of extreme heat and cold than wood and therefore more stable in these conditions. However DO NOT drop your pen, as these materials are more brittle than wood and can crack or chip if dropped. You may use plastic polish to revive the luster, also a quality rubbing compound can buff out light scratches. FOUNTAIN PEN CARE Before putting ink in your pen, make a series of “curly-Q’s” on a piece of brown paper bag. Do this lightly, without exerting pressure on the nib. This will break the nib in to your way of writing. Now install the ink cartridge or fill the converter and write a letter to someone important to you. DO NOT apply pressure to the nib when writing, remember, this is not a BIC. Pressure when writing will damage the nib. Your fountain pen should glide effortlessly across the paper. Periodically flush it out, filling it with cool water and emptying it a few times. Doing this once every few months will keep dried ink from building up and interfering with ink flow. Do not use hot water or solvents. Do not soak any part of the pen other than the nib. Use only high quality inks intended for fountain pens. I recommend Private Reserve ink. Never use India ink because the solids in it will clog he nib and feed. Use a good quality smooth finish paper, like your bank checks. Coated paper does not absorb ink well and soft, “fuzzy” papers absorb ink too well. Both can clog the nib. |
